
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has again highlighted a core user-experience challenge facing the network: while Layer 2 (L2) rollups have lowered transaction costs relative to the Ethereum mainnet, the broader L2 landscape remains fragmented, unpredictable, and difficult for everyday users to navigate.
Lower Fees, Higher Complexity
L2 networks such as optimistic and zero-knowledge rollups move computation off Ethereum’s base layer to reduce congestion and fees. Despite these benefits, users often face a patchwork of networks, bridges, and tooling. Moving assets between rollups can require multiple steps, fee markets vary by network and by time, and application support differs across ecosystems, creating friction that can deter mainstream adoption.
Key Pain Points for Users
- Network fragmentation: Users must choose among multiple rollups, manage different RPC endpoints, and navigate ecosystem-specific bridges and explorers.
- Unpredictable costs and finality: L2 fees depend partly on mainnet data costs, causing variability. Transaction confirmation times and finality assurances differ across rollups.
- Bridging and withdrawal frictions: Moving assets between L2s or back to mainnet can be slow or complex. Some optimistic rollups feature challenge periods before withdrawals finalize.
- Inconsistent wallet and app support: Token lists, approvals, and liquidity can be siloed by network, requiring repeated setup steps and fragmenting user activity.
Work Underway to Improve UX
Developers and ecosystem teams are pursuing several initiatives aimed at making L2 usage feel more unified and predictable:
- EIP-4844 (proto-danksharding): Introduced in 2024 to reduce L2 data availability costs, helping lower and stabilize rollup fees.
- Account abstraction (ERC-4337): Enables smart-account features such as sponsored transactions and session keys, reducing friction for sign-ups and payments.
- Interoperability and sequencing efforts: Work on cross-rollup messaging, shared sequencing, and safer bridging aims to streamline movement of assets and data.
- Chain abstraction in wallets and middleware: Tools that minimize manual network selection seek to make interacting with multiple rollups feel like using a single, cohesive system.
