Coinbase announced new capabilities that let businesses accept USD Coin (USDC) payments directly from autonomous AI agents via Coinbase Business. The company is also expanding agent-focused trading tools and developer software, describing the initiative as a high-conviction bet on the growth of machine-to-machine commerce.
USDC Payments From AI Agents
Under the update, AI agents can initiate and settle payments to participating merchants in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin commonly used for on-chain transactions. By enabling programmable, round-the-clock settlement, Coinbase aims to streamline commerce between autonomous agents and business services.
USDC is designed to maintain a 1:1 value with the U.S. dollar and operates across multiple blockchains, making it a popular choice for cross-border and automated payments due to its speed, transparency, and interoperability.
Expanded Tools for Agent-Driven Commerce
Coinbase said it is broadening its toolset for developers building and deploying agents, including enhanced trading capabilities and software resources intended to support agent-based transactions. The company’s efforts target a range of use cases, from automated purchases of digital services and APIs to peer-to-peer interactions among software agents.
Why It Matters
Agent-based systems are increasingly used to perform tasks such as data retrieval, procurement, and resource allocation. Enabling those agents to transact natively in stablecoins could reduce friction in online commerce, support microtransactions, and provide faster settlement compared to traditional payment rails.
For businesses, accepting USDC from agents may open new revenue channels tied to automated workloads, while offering predictable pricing and near-instant settlement. For developers, expanded agent tooling could lower barriers to building applications that interact economically without human intervention.
