Bitcoin News: Sui Co-Founder Builds $10 Quantum-Safe Hardware Wallets

Mysten Labs co-founder and chief cryptographer Kostas “Kryptos” Chalkias said he has leased a factory to mass-produce quantum-resistant hardware wallet cards for the Sui blockchain, aiming to address emerging security risks that he says have already led to roughly $130 million in bitcoin losses.

Factory Move Targets Quantum-Safe Wallet Production

Chalkias said he “quietly” secured manufacturing capacity to produce card-form hardware wallets designed to be quantum-resistant. The initiative focuses on Sui, the layer-1 blockchain developed by Mysten Labs, and is intended to give users a dedicated device for safeguarding private keys against future cryptographic threats.

Hardware wallets store private keys offline and are widely used to reduce the risk of online theft. Quantum-resistant, or post-quantum, approaches aim to protect digital assets from potential future attacks by powerful quantum computers that could undermine classical public-key cryptography.

Why Quantum Safety Matters

Chalkias framed the effort as a response to rising concerns over quantum-era security, citing recent losses of around $130 million affecting bitcoin holders. While today’s widely used cryptographic schemes remain secure against current threats, researchers and standards bodies have been preparing for the long-term risk that quantum computing could eventually break common algorithms used across blockchains.

Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) refers to digital signature and encryption schemes believed to be resistant to quantum attacks. Industry efforts are underway to standardize and deploy PQC, though widespread implementation across blockchains and consumer devices remains in early stages.

About Mysten Labs and Sui

Mysten Labs is the developer of Sui, a high-throughput layer-1 blockchain launched in 2023 and built with the Move programming language. The project emphasizes fast finality and scalable transaction processing for decentralized applications. Chalkias, a co-founder of Mysten Labs, serves as its chief cryptographer.

What to Watch Next

Key details such as supported cryptographic algorithms, certification standards, code audit plans, and compatibility with other networks were not disclosed. Industry observers will be watching for technical specifications, pricing and availability, and whether the devices will be open source or support broader multi-chain use beyond Sui.
