Tom Lee: How a 2% Bitcoin Bet Became an 85% Portfolio

Tom Lee Says Early Bitcoin Allocation Has Grown to More Than 85% of Some Portfolios

Fundstrat founder and Bitmine chairman Tom Lee said an investment strategy that once recommended a small bitcoin allocation has produced a substantially larger share of portfolio value for investors who followed it and held their positions.

Fundstrat’s Early Bitcoin Recommendation

More than a decade ago, Fundstrat advised clients who were willing to gain exposure to cryptocurrency to allocate approximately 2% of their portfolios to bitcoin. The strategy emphasized maintaining the position rather than actively trading it.

Lee said that, over time, the value of bitcoin in portfolios that followed the recommendation grew to account for more than 85% of the average portfolio.

Portfolio Concentration Increased Over Time

The shift reflects bitcoin’s performance relative to other assets during the period, rather than a change in the original allocation recommendation. A small initial position can become a much larger portion of a portfolio when one asset appreciates significantly and the investor does not rebalance.

Lee’s comments highlight how long-term cryptocurrency holdings can materially alter portfolio composition. They also underscore the potential for concentration to increase when investors retain an appreciating asset without adjusting its weighting.
