Bitcoin: Fed Raises Rates Again After Years of Holds and Cuts

Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates for First Time Since July 2023

The Federal Reserve has raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time in more than three years, ending a 1,148-day period without an increase. The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously to lift the federal funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4%.

FOMC Approves Quarter-Point Increase

The 12-0 decision marks the first rate increase since July 26, 2023. The move brings the federal funds target range to its highest level since that previous tightening decision.

The federal funds rate influences borrowing costs across the economy, including rates for consumer loans, business financing and other credit products. Changes in the benchmark rate can also affect investor demand for risk-sensitive assets.

Potential Implications for Cryptocurrency Markets

Higher interest rates generally increase the relative appeal of yield-bearing traditional assets and can reduce the availability of lower-cost capital. Those conditions may influence market liquidity and investor appetite for volatile assets, including bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The rate increase does not, by itself, determine the direction of cryptocurrency prices. Market participants typically assess the decision alongside the Federal Reserve’s broader policy outlook and incoming economic data.
