Block Integrates Lightning Network With x402 Payment Standard

Block has connected the Bitcoin Lightning Network to the x402 payment standard, aiming to give artificial intelligence agents a way to make small, automated payments over the internet without requiring human approval for every transaction.

Reviving HTTP 402 for Internet Payments

HTTP status code 402, commonly described as “Payment Required,” was included in the original design of the web but has seen limited practical use. The x402 standard is intended to provide a framework for using the code to request and process payments for digital services.

Under the model, a website or application can respond to a request by indicating that payment is required. The client can then complete the transaction before accessing the requested resource.

Lightning Targets Fast, Small Transactions

Block’s integration adds the Lightning Network as a payment option within the x402 framework. Lightning is a Bitcoin-based layer-2 network designed to enable faster and lower-cost transactions than those typically processed directly on the Bitcoin blockchain.

The technology is particularly suited to small, frequent payments. That makes it relevant to automated software systems that may need to purchase data, access application programming interfaces or pay for other digital services repeatedly.

AI Agents and Automated Commerce

AI agents are increasingly being designed to perform tasks independently, including selecting services and interacting with online platforms. A payment system built for machine-to-machine transactions could allow these agents to complete purchases without requiring a person to manually approve each payment.

By combining x402’s payment-request mechanism with Lightning’s transaction infrastructure, Block is positioning Bitcoin as a potential settlement network for automated internet commerce. The broader adoption of the model will depend on how widely x402 is implemented by developers and online service providers.
