Alabama Enacts New Crypto ATM Scam Refund Rules

Alabama Crypto ATM Users Gain New Protections Against Scam-Related Losses

Victims of cryptocurrency ATM scams in Alabama gained new refund protections on Oct. 1, with operators becoming responsible for reimbursing qualifying losses. The rules also impose transaction limits and disclosure requirements designed to help stop fraudulent payments before they are completed.

Operators Face Reimbursement Requirements

Under the new protections, eligible victims may seek refunds from crypto ATM operators when their transactions were linked to scams. The requirements place greater responsibility on operators to identify suspicious activity and respond to reported losses.

The measures target scams in which victims are pressured to use cryptocurrency ATMs to send funds to fraudsters. These schemes often begin with an urgent call claiming that the victim faces a warrant, a banking problem or another immediate threat.

Victims Have 60 Days to Report Losses

Alabama scam victims face a 60-day deadline to request reimbursement. People who believe they were defrauded through a crypto ATM should report the transaction to the operator as soon as possible and retain relevant records, including receipts, wallet addresses, phone numbers and communications from the suspected scammer.

Transaction Limits and Disclosures

The rules also introduce transaction limits and require operators to provide disclosures to users. These measures are intended to create additional opportunities for customers to recognize fraudulent instructions and interrupt payments before funds are transferred.

Cryptocurrency ATM transactions can be difficult to reverse once completed. Consumers should be cautious of anyone demanding payment in cryptocurrency or instructing them to use a crypto ATM to resolve an alleged legal, banking or account-related issue.
