Binance US plots comeback from 2-year hibernation, targets 20% market share

Binance.US chief executive Stephen Gregory said the exchange has shifted back to growth mode after a two-year “hibernation” that followed regulatory turbulence surrounding the broader Binance brand. In a recent interview, Gregory outlined a comeback plan aimed at restoring the platform’s position in the U.S. crypto market.

Binance.US Signals Return to Expansion

Gregory described the past two years as a deliberate period of retrenchment, emphasizing a renewed focus on rebuilding market share and user trust. He indicated the company is preparing to scale operations again after navigating heightened scrutiny and operational constraints.

Before the slowdown, Binance.US at one point commanded a significant portion of domestic crypto trading activity, previously estimated near 20% of the U.S. market. Volumes fell sharply during the contraction as the platform pared back services and liquidity providers exited.

Regulatory Backdrop and Market Share Slide

The shift comes after a prolonged regulatory overhang tied to the wider Binance ecosystem. In 2023, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued Binance Holdings, Binance.US, and then–Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, alleging violations of securities laws. Later that year, Binance Holdings reached a multibillion-dollar settlement with U.S. authorities over separate compliance failures, and Zhao stepped down from Binance Holdings. Binance.US, which operates as a separate entity, nonetheless faced reputational and operational spillovers from the broader crackdown.

During that period, Binance.US limited certain services, including U.S. dollar on-ramps, and reduced trading pairs as banking and liquidity relationships tightened. The platform’s market share and volumes declined materially, while competitors such as Coinbase and Kraken consolidated their positions among U.S. retail and institutional traders.

What Comes Next

While Gregory did not disclose full details of the comeback plan in the interview, the push back to “growth mode” suggests Binance.US will focus on restoring depth of liquidity, rebuilding fiat payment rails, and enhancing product offerings under tighter compliance controls. The company’s ability to regain momentum will likely hinge on several factors:

  • Stability and clarity in ongoing U.S. regulatory proceedings affecting the exchange and the broader market.
  • Reestablishing robust banking and payment relationships to support deposits, withdrawals, and institutional flows.
  • Competitive pricing and liquidity to attract market makers and active traders.
  • Clear communications around risk management, custody, and compliance frameworks to rebuild user confidence.

Why It Matters

A successful relaunch by Binance.US would reshape the competitive landscape for U.S. crypto trading. Increased liquidity and tighter spreads generally benefit market participants, while a stronger compliance posture across major platforms could support more durable institutional participation. The trajectory of Binance.US over the coming quarters will be a key indicator of how quickly market share can be reclaimed after a prolonged period of regulatory pressure and operational retrenchment.
