Bitcoin market participants are preparing for potential transaction risks if a minority chain emerges this weekend, with experts warning that signed transactions on a forked chain could be replayed on Bitcoin itself until the two networks are fully separated.

Replay Risk During a Chain Split

A minority chain can appear when a subset of miners and nodes continue with different protocol rules, creating a parallel blockchain that shares the same history as Bitcoin up to the split. If the fork does not include strong replay protection, a transaction broadcast on one chain may also be valid on the other. In that scenario, a transaction used to sell or move the forked asset could be copied and rebroadcast on the Bitcoin network, potentially causing unintended transfers of BTC.

This replay vulnerability can persist until the chains implement clear, irreversible differences—such as distinct transaction formats or mandatory replay protection—that prevent transactions from being valid on both networks.

Replay attacks can lead to loss of funds, settlement disputes, and operational disruptions. Historically, exchanges and custodians have responded to similar events by tightening controls around deposits and withdrawals, increasing confirmation requirements, or temporarily pausing certain services while assessing network stability.
