China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) said it has discovered sea turtles and fish in its territorial waters fitted with miniature sensors, warning the devices could be used to collect oceanographic data for detailed submarine mapping. The warning was published on the agency’s official WeChat account on June 12, 2026, and also referenced other maritime surveillance equipment such as espionage buoys.
