Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao said he has no intention of returning as chief executive of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, adding that the company no longer needs him at the helm.
Leadership Shift Remains in Place
Zhao stepped down as CEO in November 2023 after Binance and its founder reached a settlement with U.S. authorities over compliance failures. Richard Teng, a former regulator and Binance executive, was appointed chief executive the same month and has since overseen the exchange’s operations and regulatory strategy.
Zhao’s Post-CEO Role
Zhao remains Binance’s founder and a prominent industry figure but is not involved in the company’s day-to-day management. Since leaving the top job, he has discussed focusing on education and entrepreneurial initiatives outside the exchange, signaling a continued move away from operational leadership.
Implications for Binance
Zhao’s remarks underscore continuity in Binance’s succession and governance, reinforcing that Teng will continue to lead the exchange through a period of heightened regulatory scrutiny and market maturation. The clarification may help dispel speculation about a potential leadership return and supports Binance’s emphasis on compliance and institutional processes established since late 2023.
