Deribit has secured a Broker-Dealer License from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), following its acquisition by Coinbase for $2.9 billion. As part of the integration, Deribit’s spot buy, sell, and trade orders will be routed directly into Coinbase’s liquidity, aiming to enhance execution quality for users.
VARA License Authorizes Broker-Dealer Activity in Dubai
The VARA authorization permits Deribit to operate broker-dealer services for virtual assets within the Emirate of Dubai, subject to the regulator’s rules and oversight. VARA, established in 2022, is the dedicated authority supervising virtual asset activities in Dubai (excluding the DIFC), and its licensing regime has become a key framework for global crypto firms seeking compliant market access in the UAE.
Routing Spot Orders to Coinbase Liquidity
With the new license in place, Deribit will channel its spot order flow into Coinbase’s liquidity pool. The integration is designed to provide deeper order books and potentially tighter spreads for spot transactions executed via Deribit, while leveraging Coinbase’s established market infrastructure.
Strategic Context
Deribit is known primarily for its crypto derivatives marketplace, particularly options and futures. Tapping Coinbase’s liquidity for spot orders aligns the platform’s brokerage operations with a larger liquidity venue and reflects the broader consolidation and institutionalization trend in digital asset markets. The move also reinforces Dubai’s position as a hub for regulated virtual asset activity under VARA’s licensing framework.
