X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, is rolling out “Smart Cashtags,” a feature that brings real-time crypto and stock prices, charts, and related discussions directly into user timelines. The tool is designed to reduce confusion around tickers and smart contracts, and it could position X more firmly as a hub for financial information. A public release is targeted for next month, according to the company.
What Smart Cashtags Do
Smart Cashtags will let users tag specific assets across crypto, equities, ETFs, and other instruments. Tapping a tagged ticker opens an in-app page showing live prices, price changes, charts, and posts that mention the asset. The feature aims to eliminate app-switching by embedding market data and conversation in one place.
“We are developing Smart Cashtags, which will allow you to specify particular assets (or smart contracts) when posting market updates. Users will be able to click these tags in the timeline to view real-time prices of the asset as well as all information mentioning that asset,” said X Head of Product Nikita Bier in a post on the platform.
Reducing Ticker Confusion
X says Smart Cashtags are built to reduce ambiguity in markets where identical symbols can refer to different assets. In some cases, assets will be identified by their underlying on-chain smart contract addresses, helping users distinguish between tokens with overlapping tickers.
- Tag exact assets or smart contracts when posting
- View real-time prices, percentage changes, and charts
- Browse recent posts and discussions tied to the tagged asset
Product Design and Release Timeline
UI mockups shared by Bier show auto-complete asset search with real-time prices and market capitalizations. A detailed asset page includes performance charts and a feed of posts mentioning the ticker. Some mockups depict buy/sell buttons; X has not announced trading functionality, and the company said it plans to collect user feedback before the broader rollout expected next month.
Why It Matters
By embedding live market data and asset-level context into posts, X is expanding beyond passive market commentary toward a real-time gateway for tracking financial assets. Analyst AB Kuai Dong suggested the platform could eventually become an entry point for stock and crypto trading through potential partnerships with exchanges and traditional brokers, though no such agreements have been announced.
