Bitcoin News: Jamaica Debates New Law to Regulate Crypto Firms

Jamaican Lawmakers Debate Proposed Virtual Assets Service Providers Act

Jamaica’s House of Representatives has begun debating the Virtual Assets Service Providers Act, proposed legislation that would establish a licensing and supervisory framework for cryptocurrency exchanges and other digital-asset businesses operating in the country.

Proposed Framework for Virtual Asset Businesses

The bill seeks to formally define virtual asset businesses and create regulatory requirements for companies that provide services involving digital currencies and other virtual assets.

If approved, the legislation would place eligible businesses under a structured licensing regime. The framework is intended to provide greater clarity for firms operating in Jamaica while establishing standards for regulatory supervision.

Focus on Exchanges and Digital-Asset Providers

Cryptocurrency exchanges and other businesses offering virtual asset-related services would be among the entities affected by the proposed law. The legislation would distinguish these businesses from other companies and set out the conditions under which they may operate.

The debate marks a step toward formalizing Jamaica’s approach to the digital-asset sector. However, the bill remains under consideration and has not yet become law.

Next Steps in the Legislative Process

Further parliamentary debate and consideration will be required before the proposed Virtual Assets Service Providers Act can be enacted. Until that process is complete, the final requirements and scope of the regulatory framework remain subject to change.
